This painting started in 1998 shows a strong sense of abstraction and color choice, collaged with a name brand business card placed either to almost validating the isolated journey of an abstract painter, or was it a visionary insight into the direction the art world was headed in the late 90s. Today even the most obscure artists of their day like Ad Reinhardt, Philip Guston, Clifford Still and Arshile Gorky are being sought after by major corporate collections and private equity firms.
In 1986 while in Graduate School Quigley worked summers as a assistant for painter Sheila Isham in Bridgehampton. He met Ralph Lifshitz at a cocktail party and sold him a long, narrow, abstract work on paper for $100. , not knowing Ralph's last name was also Lauren. It took nearly 20 years to meet Mr. Lauren again during an exhibition of his infamous car collection at the Boston MFA through one of Quigley's collectors Robert Beal. Beal and his brother Bruce have assisted in many philanthropic ventures in the Boston Art World, including developing a Contemporary wing at the MFA.
