William Quigley Bio

William Quigley was born on April 29, 1961  in Yeadon, Pennsylvania. From 1980-88 he studied 4 years at Philadelphia College of Art, a semester at Tyler School of Art in Rome, a year at University of Pennsylvania and 2 years at Columbia University Graduate School. Studying under artists and historians such as Lee Krasner, Alice Neel, Milos Forman, Laurie Anderson, Louise Fishman, Frank Auerbach, Walter Darby Bannard, Annette Insdorf, John Yau, Clement Greenberg among others opened his mind to critical thinking fortified with a strong art historical foundation. His first interests were cartoons, then figurative painting mixed with abstraction while in school.

His first exhibition in June 1985 right out of college was a sell out show of 5 abstract works alongside Andy Warhol’s Images of a Child’s World Exhitiion at Henry S. McNeil’s Gallery in Philadelphia. McNeil, one of the leading collectors in Philadelphia was acquiring and showing not so well yet established artists including Jean Michel Basquiat, Alice Aycock, Willie Heeks, David Salle, Barbara Kruger, Julian Schnabel, Francesco Clemente, Sigmar Polke, Pat Steir, mixed with proven talent like Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, George Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Richard Artschwager, Cy Twombly and Warhol. Surrounded by such diverse aesthetics established a launching pad and intellectual dialogue for Quigley’s artistic endeavors. He continued to show with McNeil and some downtown NY spaces while attending Columbia University Graduate School, when in 1988 an opportunity to paint in Maracaibo, Venezuela came about.

After leaving Columbia, he lived in South America for 3 months before landing in Los Angeles in 1989. Once settled, painting in a backyard garage in West Hollywood he met prestigious art dealer Manny Silverman who provided a monthly stipend and large 5000 sq ft Hollywood studio shared with painter Manuel Ocampo. Silverman was one of the first Los Angeles galleries to present abstract expressionist artists Joan Mitchell, Michael Goldberg, Robert Motherwell, Sam Francis, Mark Rothko, Alfred Leslie Willem De Kooning, Emerson Woelfer, Jackson Pollock, Giorgio Cavallon and Robert Rauschenberg etc. to the west coast. He continued to paint religiously, while occasionally dabbling in the film world for extra money co-writing and designing sets for 2 films with producer Ray Habush, Dark Side of Genius directed by Phedon Papamichael and Eric Schlagman’s Punch the Clock shot in Brooklyn NY. The side job led to working on sets for commercials for directors David Fincher, Nigel Dick, Bill Livingston, Roger Tonry, Joe Pytka, Dick Buckley and music videos for Madonna, Prince, Tom Petty, Eminem, Paula Abdul, Jane’s Addiction, OutKast, and Ice Cube from 1989-1992.

In 1992 Art Basel Fair founder Ernst Beyeler & dealer Ferran Cano saw Quigley’s work in the LA Art Fair  booth of William Turner Gallery and offered a residency to paint in Joan Miro’s studio in Mallorca for 8 months, now the Miro Foundation. In Spain he produced over 45 works created from scraps found in the streets, old bottles, a wooden ticket window from a 100 yr old bullring and Bullfight posters peeled off walls around the island. Cano offered a solo show based on the works made in Mallorca, continuing to host the works in his booth at Art Basel, Art Chicago, FIAC and ARCO. The gallery sold nearly everything before Quigley left Europe.

Returning to Los Angeles decided to open AB Gallery. The gallery was located in 2 mini malls, one on Robertson Blvd and the other at Highland / Sunset Blvd, each artist had their own store front. The collective lasted from 1994-1996, directed by dealer Dan Bernier showing artists Marc Chiat, Steve Hurd, Russell Crotty, Manuel Ocampo, Martin Kersels, George Stoll, Kevin Sullivan, Jason Rhoades, Rachel Khedorri, Mike Bismuth, William Livingston, Julien Bismuth, John Sonsini, Dan Fisher, Marshall Weber and Mike Bouchet. AB closed in 1996 and reopening years later in East Hampton 2021.

In 1998 and 1999 Quigley traveled to India to paint for 5 months.  After receiving interest from Gagosian gallery in 1998, he moved back to New York City, and moved into a studio in the Starett Lehigh building on 26th St and the west side highway. There he met and began collaborating with director Eric Heimbold and his brother Pete Francis, founder of the band Dispatch; creating the brand Skrapper. Performing on stage as a dancer named Mr. Wiggles, Quigley and Francis created stage spectacles and hanging abstract painted backdrops playing montage video clips of Quigley’s paintings, scenic landscapes, scripted words or close ups of the band members as they performed.  In 2007 and 2015 Dispatch became the first US indie band to sell out Madison Square Garden 7 times, touring stadiums all over the US And Europe and donating thousands of dollars to Aids in Zimbabwe and US based Hunger Org.

The first Skrapper launch was 1999 showcasing a line of T-shirts, hand painted skirts and swimwear for a runway show at the Limelight during NY Fashion Week. It coupled with  a new, unknown sponsor Grey Goose Vodka. Quigley introduced owner Sydney Frank to Red Bull head Arne Zimmerman. He mixed the first Red Bull / Grey Goose cocktail at his solo show on his birthday April 29, 1999. The merger jump started the 2 brands with Skrapper hosting hip art and fashion events at NY clubs and restaurants from 1999-2010. Skrapper even produced its own bottled Cab/Franc with Vinum Cellars in 2009 for a fashion show with Red Bull as sponsors. In 2005 Skrapper sponsored the 2 brands to host an event with Uncle Funky’s Jeffrey Gaites, Tony Alva and Eric Weinrib, Quigley dubbed ”Boarding for Breast Cancer”; curating 107 artists, athletes and icons supporting Sony’s Lords of Dogtown movie launch at MILK Studios in NYC.

In 2011 he met collectors John and Joanna Boynton who started collecting his works and offered a space in their newly renovated community art complex, ArtScape at the 1906 Bradford Mill / Wheelhouse in Concord, MA. At Artscape although continuing to paint abstractly, Quigley produced some of his most prolific portraits including Jackie Robinson, Mike Tyson, Michael Jackson, Ted Williams, a second Ali, and 3 Abraham Lincoln paintings. Concord resident and Lincoln historian Doris Kearns Goodwin would visit and offer advice while she was finishing the screenplay based on her novel Team of Rivals. Quigley says, “Imagine talking with Doris about Lincoln?

Because he needed to get back to NY and of his love for Willem de Kooning he left Concord and moved to East Hampton into a large mechanics garage, found on Craigslist, in a 120 yr old property on Schenck Fuels. From 2013-2018 every summer artist Ben Moon, Clay and Parker Calvert would curate pop up shows with other artists.

In 2020 Quigley started to expand and found a large studio close to Schenck, deciding to give AB Gallery another go round. Partnering  with director Sarah Scribner who runs  the space and directs the gallery. In 2020 dealer Julie Keyes offered Quigley a solo show and quite a few group shows in her Sag Harbor gallery. Keyes is one of the most respected private dealers and best eyes in the art world, who also happened to be a very close friend the de Kooning family.  She has been instrumental in building his career by exhibiting work with many East End legendary artists like Nathan Slate Joseph, Dr Leslee Stradford, Fay Lansner, Paul Davis, Nela Arias-Mission, Hilary Helfant, Virva Hinnemo, John Torreano, Claude Lawrence, Lester Johnson, Larry Rivers, De Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, George Negroponte, John + Duncan Chamberlain, John MacWhinnie, etc.

In 2020 after his father, William Quigley passed in April a seeming angel also named William Quigley from Oakland, CA called randomly and discussed minting a series of NFTs. The 2 (maybe 3) Quigley’s partnered in June 2020 selling out 714 NFTs in less than a minute. The duo dropped 2 more times in 2021/22  selling nearly 3000 Skrapper NFTs to date.

Through a career long dedication to charitable causes especially Education in urban cities, Veterans and anything health related that began in 1987, in 2006 his work was featured on ABC TV, “Life Styles of the Rich and Famous”; and in 2007 was selected as VH1 featured Artist of the Year along with honorees, John Mayer, Mariah Carey, Roger Waters, John Sykes, and President William & Hillary Clinton.

Skrapper’s goals are to collaborate with others who share a desire to play conscious part helping to raise awareness for those who may need it.  One focus is the 75 year history of The East Hampton Artists & Writers Annual Softball Game started by Franz Kline, Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollock and De Kooning. It’s events are dedicated to building a community around the annual tradition and building a better game to serve and involve the East End community supporting 4 local charities.

Quigley is represented by Julie Keyes Fine Art, AB NY Gallery, Karl Hutter Fine Art and Soho Contemporary.  He paints in New York City and East Hampton.
